Shingles Contagious

Shingles widely known as Herpes Zoster occurs in the later years for persons who had contracted chicken pox. It develops a painful rash and turns into blisters and remains for more than two weeks. When shingles advances it may cause severe problems which may in turn lead to vision loss and hearing impairment.

Now is there any prevention for this? Yes, shingles can be prevented by vaccine which can be used for people above 60

years. The vaccine is the safest method to prevent a person from the suffering. This vaccine will in turn prevent the person from getting contracted in the future.

Shingles vaccine came into effect after being tested on both men and women. The result showed that more than 50% of the people have reduced the risk of contracting shingles again. The shingles vaccine should be taken as a single dose injection, which is 14 times more effective.

There are not much of side-effects, if so there is usually a slight swelling, soreness, headaches and itching. The vaccine is sure to reduce the complications and is more of use for people above 60. The vaccine is also effective for the person who may have had chicken pox. The vaccine is tested only on people above 60 plus and not on younger people.

Youngsters whose immune system is weak or the ones who are under chemotherapy or radiotherapy should not take this vaccine. Pregnant women or to be pregnant women also should avoid shingles vaccine. Proper consultation should be made with the doctor before taking shingles vaccine.

The vaccine contains varicella, the live virus sometimes may infect persons who have less immunity. So if you or any of the people you know may not be infected with chicken pox or may not have had chicken pox vaccine, there should be a proper consultation with the doctor before taking the vaccination.
