Shingles Contagious

Shingles, a skin disease caused by a viral infection, can prove to be very difficult to treat. Actually it is a self limiting disease which, after running its course, heals by itself. However, it is a painful disease which may run as well as 14 days. Therefore the first thing which comes to anyone’s mind is what are the treatment options that one has in case of shingles?

Although there is no direct shingles treatment yet there are remedies mostly, home

remedies, which can offer temporary relief from the pain and itching. The most important thing, however, is self care.

  • One effective treatment is to continuously put ice bags on the affected areas of the skin. This will give you relief from the burning sensation and itching. Dermatologists also prescribe ointments and sedatives for some relief from the pain and discomfort. If the pain is too much then the doctor may prescribe painkillers.

  • Keep the area clean and dry. Wash the affected area with cold water and mild soap. But remember never to use hot water as it will increase the discomfort. You can also apply petroleum jelly as it helps in the healing process.

  • Also some antiviral medications can also lower the duration of skin rash and itching, including the pain of PHN. However for the best results most of these medicines must be given early, i.e. up to 24-72 hours after the appearance of the rash.

Another option for shingles treatment is to use electronic nerve stimulation therapy. This also gives relief from the discomfort. However, not all patients get equal benefit as its effects vary from patient to patient
